Brief Description

The contents of this book present definitions of concepts and lists of relations between concepts of nine conceptual models, and emphasize the pragmatics of constructing conceptual-theoretical-empirical structures to better understand and appreciate how the starting point for all practice, quality improvement projects, and research always is a nursing conceptual model. Conceptual-theoretical-empirical structures for the assessment and intervention phases of the nursing process, for quality improvement projects, and for research, including literature reviews, instrument development, descriptive qualitative research, correlational research, experimental research, and mixed method research were formalized primarily from existing publications. The conceptual models included in this book are Johnson’s Behavioral Systems Model, King’s Conceptual System, Levine’s Conservation Model, Neuman’s Systems Model, Orem’s Self-Care Framework, Rogers’ Science of Unitary Human Beings, Roy’s Adaptation Model, the Synergy Model, and the Transitions Framework.

Jacqueline Fawcett

Jacqueline Fawcett is a professor in the Department of Nursing (Nursology) at the  University of Massachusetts Boston. Although she has conducted two major programs of research during her career, one guided by Rogers’ Science of Unitary Human Beings and the other guided by Roy’s Adaptation Model, her passion is meta-theory, that is, the nature and structure of knowledge in nursing, which is the focus of this book.
