Recollections of Martha Raile Alligood, RN, PhD, ANEF

In February of 2016 I was contacted by Dan Krivicich and asked if I would create a list of 6 more theorists for another volume of Nurse Theorists Portraits of Excellence. The plan was for this volume to be middle-range theories with an emphasis on nursing practice. He explained that he planned to bring the theorists to Athens so that the filming could be done at Fitne, Inc. studios. He explained that he wanted to complete the project by the end of June, 2016. I prepared a list and began making contacts and plans for their visit with potential theorists. Dan and I worked together on the procedure and it was decided we would film two videos each time. However, coordinating the dates with the theorists modified that plan. Finally, it was decided that I would fly into Columbus and come to Athens in a rental car and each theorist would fly into Columbus and be transported to Athens. I believe Dr. Kolkaba came by car accompanied by her husband. I negotiated my lodging and that of the theorists to be at the historical Ohio University Inn. They had a lovely dining room with a pianist each evening so dinner with the theorists were also at the Inn and we could discuss the process and plan for the next day. I transported each theorist to Fitne, Inc. Studio.
Each of the videos for Vol 3 was filmed in the studio with the same equipment and filming photographer. The crew was very helpful and it was my pleasure to conduct the interviews with the following theorists:
- Kathy Kolkaba,
- Savina Schoenhofer,
- Marilyn Dee Ray
- Cheryl Beck
- Marilyn McFarland on the application of Madeline Leininger’s theory of Culture Care
- Elizabeth Ann Manhart Barrett.
Dr. Barrett was the only theorist I knew prior to the project to develop Vol 3. It was a delight to meet each of the theorists and discuss their theories with them. As I was born and grew up in Morgan County which is adjacent to Athens County, I visited family the weekend between filming rather than flying back and forth. The flyer produced to announce the production of Vol 3 is below.
