It is always SONEI in Nursing Ethics…
…with apologies for a bit of morning pre-latte humor!
The Society for Nursing Ethics International (SONEI.org) has been established and the website has gone 🎉 live! The website is fully open, fully accessible to subscribers and non-subscribers alike — and it is entirely FREE. Because, well, nurses are freely caring!
What is SONEI?
We are a group of scholars in nursing ethics who wish to share, collaborate, and celebrate nursing ethics! Nursing ethics is over a century older than bioethics and is our own professional ethics, by-nurses-for-nurses, beginning with the inception of modern nursing in the 1860s.
Discussion of the formation of a society for nursing ethics began when the American Academy of Nursing dissolved its expert panels, including the Expert Panel on Bioethics, in late 2025. Thereafter, several former expert panel members began discussion of forming a group that would focus on nursing ethics, would include nurses beyond the senior scholars in ethics who were members of the Academy, and beyond the borders of the US. The group decided to form and name the new organization the Society for Nursing Ethics International. Then, we created a website!
Here is what you can find on the website:

- Resources on the history and development of nursing ethics from the 1800s to the present, and books, chapters, and articles on its renewal for nursing today.
- There is a section on the philosophical foundations of nursing ethics, and a section on a fulsome range of ethics, ethical theories, and allied theories that intersect with ethics. These include feminist, womanist, and mujerista ethics; philosophical ethics, political theories and social contract; philosophies of personhood; ethical methodologies, bioethics, the common good, and much, much more.
- There are over 500 carefully curated references that include overviews for learners, works for mid and advanced scholars of nursing ethics; and foundational, key, and contemporary works in each section of the website.
- Need links to additional resources such as global core documents? We have over 100 links for you. Interested in codes of ethics? We have links to over 20 countries’ codes of ethics for nurses.
- Are you interested in the humanities & ethics—we have a growing section for that as well.
- Want to reach out to connect with others, perhaps to collaborate on a project? You can do that too, through our contact page.
The website is fully open, fully accessible to subscribers and non-subscribers alike. We will continue to build the website and its resources for those who want to learn, teach, research, write on, and implement nursing ethics.
Interested? Head on over to SONEI.org, and subscribe using the “subscribe” box in the sidebar. We plan to have a weekly blog coming soon, and subscribers will receive an email notice of new blog posts. Come and join us–we hope to see you there!
I am very excited to integrate SONEI into my nursing scholarship and practice. Thank you Drs. Chinn, Fowler and your team for making authentic nursing centered ethics an accessible resource.
