Title – Positioning Nursing Knowledge Where It Belongs – In Nursing!
When: January 21, 2027, 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM, Central Time (US and Canada)
Host, Peggy L. Chinn, RN, PhD, FAAN
Forum description
There is a tendency for nurse educators, nurses in practice, and nurses in research and administration, to dismiss nursing theory as irrelevant to their practical day-to-day work. This Forum will challenge this idea, and provide compelling reasons to recognize the imperative to think and act from the perspectives that characterize our discipline. The Forum will provide an overview of the resources available on Nursology.net and on SONEI.org (website for the Society for Nursing Ethics International), highlighting ways these ideas shape our actions.
Critical Questions for Discussion
- Many research projects, practice setting and nursing education programs do not yet ground their work in nursing theory, and perspectives related to ethics tend to be co-opted by discourse around medical bio-ethics . Assuming change is needed to bring nursing knowledge to the center, how can we encourage and facilitate this change?
- What are the barriers to making this change? How can these barriers be addressed and overcome?
- In Nursing education, what could a “Nursology 101” course be for entry-level programs? For advanced degree programs a “Nursology 601”? What changes are needed to bring nursing ethics to the center? What resistance would faculty face in creating such courses?
