- Of course, now I realize that there were good reasons why black people would indeed prefer their own churches. But these are not the reasons my mother had in mind, I am sure! My memory of this exchange is so strong that I am transported to the back seat of the car when I asked the question, “No seat belts?” and sat on the edge of the seat to lean closer to my mother in the passenger seat, eager for an answer to my question.

- Barack Obama’s white grandparents, in order to assure their grandson the best education possible, paid the extremely high costs for middle- and high-schooler Barack to attend mostly white Punahou. He was the only black kid, and one of very few other children of color in his class, but he writes positively about his experience despite being in a clear minority.
