Society of Rogerian Scholars Establishes New Award

The John R. Phillips Outstanding Publication/Artistic Work Award Depicting Rogers’ Science of Unitary Human Beings was endowed by John Phillips to honor his sister, Barbara D. Phillips, a newborn nursery nurse, and Martha Rogers herself.  The award acknowledges the work of scholars in the arts and sciences for contributing to Rogerian Nursing Science. The first two inaugural awards were given October 5, 2024 to Rosemarie Parse, RN; PhD and to the author, Maria Smilios.

Rosemarie Parse

Dr. Rosemarie Parse, a preeminent nurse theorist, is the creator and editor of Nursing Science Quarterly.  Over many years the journal has been recognized for its outstanding content,  advancing nursing science for nursing education, practice and research.

Maria Smilios

Maria Smilios is the author of the book The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses who Helped Cure Tuberculosis.  Smilios provides vivid portrayals of these nurses’ trials, struggles, discrimination and especially the love and compassion each gave to their patients at a time when there was no cure for tuberculosis. These black nurses played an important role in the pursuit of a cure for tuberculosis and their stories have received little if any attention in nursing history.
