The 44th Annual Transcultural Nursing Society Conference was held October 17-20, 2018 at the Embassy Suites on the Riverwalk Hotel located a short walk from the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. The international conference included over 260 participants from 48 cultures and more than 14 countries, as well as 24 US states and Puerto Rico. Speakers and attendees included a diverse and global array of transcultural nursing (TCN) and healthcare experts. Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with theorists and providers from administrative, educational, practice, and research settings in a variety of panel discussions, breakout sessions, poster sessions, and breaks.
Keynote speaker Dr. DeAnne K. Hilfinger Messias, Carolina Trustee Professor and Emily Myrtle Smith Endowed Chair at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing, presented Approaching Every Nursing Encounter with a Transcultural Lens. She discussed how increased cultural diversity has created a need for every nurse to provide care for every patient through a transcultural lens. She included strategies and opportunities that nurses in practice, education, and research can employ to ensure that transcultural nursing perspectives are applied in every patient encounter.
