Dr. John R.Phillips, recognized as the foremost scholar of Rogerian nursing science, taught in the Division of Nursing (now the Rory Meyers College of Nursing) at New York University from 1976 until his retirement in 2023. He was a colleague and friend of Dr. Martha E. Rogers, who chose him to teach her graduate course, the Science of Unitary Human Beings (SUHB), upon her retirement. With Dr. Rogers, Dr. Elizabeth Barrett, Dr. Violet Malinski, and Dr. Therese Connell Meehan he helped co-found the Society of Rogerian Scholars, serving as its first vice president.

A visionary explorer in the far reaches of Rogerian nursing science, Dr. Phillips’ thinking is ever evolving, introducing concepts such as unitariology, wellbecoming, energyspirit, and integral presence, enriching and expanding what Dr. Martha E. Rogers introduced many years ago. Dr. Phillips created the groundbreaking theory of pandimensional awareness/integral presence in addition to the new concepts and terminology. The chapter entitled “A Rogerian Vision of Gender Diversity in a Pandimensional Universe” highlights the appreciation for all forms of gender variance within the science, ones that may indeed “indicate an awakening of ongoing changes in the development of humankind, revealing changes never imagined” (p. 302). All and more are discussed in chapters in this book.

The book is a collection of Phillips’ writings published in books and refereed journals spanning the years 1990 through 2023. Readers have commented on what a blessing it is to have these works in one place rather than hunting for them across the years and publication sources. Many have commented on how they wish this publication had been available when they were students, particularly in doctoral programs. As an added benefit, Phillips wrote“Epilogue: Pattern Manifestations of Martha Rogers” specifically for this book, and “Nursing Science and the Space Age,” the seminal 1992 Nursing Science Quarterly publication by Dr. Rogers, is reproduced in the Appendix. Thus this book is a 335 page goldmine of information about the Science of Unitary Human Beings. Readers will also enjoy seeing the photos of Dr. Rogers and Dr. Phillips through the years.

A series of endorsements in the front of the book reflect both the significance of Dr. Phillips’ work to the discipline and the high regard in which he is held. Following are just a few examples of such comments.

  • His publications affirm a cosmology of human-universe ahead of its time; yet ironically, on-time, with quantum awakening of a global worldview.” Jean Watson
  • All of Dr. Phillips’ publications have advanced the SUHB in ways no one else even dreamed of…Every paper in this book is a journey of enlightenment for every reader.” Jacqueline Fawcett
  • The remarkable variety of topics he elaborated illustrate his reflective knowledge of Rogerian science. He pushed onward spreading the vision of Martha E. Rogers while honoring and strengthening the roots of her work.” Rosemarie Rizzo Parse
  • Dr. Phillips, who knew and worked with Dr. Martha Rogers for many years, has a particular understanding of Rogers’ thought based on hours of conversation with her—conversations that I am sure challenged and inspired the depths of their scholarship.” Peggy L. Chinn

This book is available through Amazon, $24.99 for the paperback and $9.99 for the e-book. It is also available through Ingram Spark which provides books ordered online for companies such as Barnes & Noble. Orders can also be placed directly with Barnes & Noble.

  1. It is wonderful to see a compilation of his recent works that are contributing to the science. I, like others, appreciate all his work and service for the advancement of Rogers’ Science of Unitary Human Beings. Kudos to the SRS Resource Committee that worked hard to do all that was necessary to publish this book!
